GRUBB PROPERTIES JOINS HURRICANE KATRINA RELIEF EFFORTS WITH RENT-FREE APARTMENTS FOR DISPLACED FAMILIES Grubb Properties today announced its partnership with Temple Beth El and Unity Church at Charlotte to help meet the diverse needs of Hurricane Katrina evacuees finding their way to Charlotte. In particular, the partnership is currently assisting fifteen households with needs ranging from housing to furniture to food, household items and clothing. Grubb Properties moved four families into apartments at 3400 Selwyn Avenue over the past weekend and has filled another four apartments at its Park South Apartments this week. All families will receive rent-free lodging for 90 days, after which the partnership will defray housing costs for another 90 days. The unique partnership has been named “Yad b’yad” – Hebrew for “hand in hand.” In addition to housing, Temple Beth El and Unity Church at Charlotte are coordinating large-scale volunteer and donor efforts to provide necessary items and support services to these families as well as others arriving in Charlotte in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. As of today – after working with the American Red Cross in the Triangle area of North Carolina last week – Grubb Properties has also “leased” six apartments at the Glen Lennox Cottages in Chapel Hill on a 90-day rent-free basis to flood-victim families from Louisiana and Mississippi. Grubb has also offered to provide rental furniture at no cost for the first month, and at least one retailer – Furniture Follies in Carrboro – has agreed to donate furniture to displaced families living in the company’s Triangle area apartments. “We’re just glad to be able to help,” Clay Grubb, company president, said. “And we happen to have exactly what these people need right now: a comfortable place to sleep at night and a home base from which to reorganize their lives. At times like this, everyone in the country needs to pull together and this is something we’re in a unique position to do. He added that property-level relief efforts are also being conducted at the individual initiative of the company’s employees. “It’s one thing for us as a company to set aside apartments, but I’m most proud of the way our local team members across the state are organizing efforts at the properties they manage – primarily apartments and offices – to assist with local relief for the families we’re housing as well as collect donations to be sent to victims now displaced around the country. I’m not sure that differentiates us from the millions of people now contributing to the relief efforts, but it’s good to see our people step up as well.” Posted: September 14, 2005 - Press Release | More News |
