Creative approaches to parking are a hallmark of essential housing. By limiting – or eliminating – parking, Grubb Properties can lower the cost of construction and pass those savings on to residents in the form of lower rents. Limiting parking also allows us to build more units than would otherwise have been possible, further addressing the nation’s undersupply of housing.
Recently, our approach to parking has been getting noticed in the press. The Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg, and Fast Company have all featured Grubb Properties in recent weeks.
These stories help to advance the discussion around parking and urban planning, and we’re pleased that Grubb Properties’ voice is part of that conversation.
The stories are:
- The Wall Street Journal, “America Has Too Much Parking. Really.”: In this front-page story, economics reporter David Harrison explored the glut of parking spaces in the country and its impact on land use, affordability, and the environment. Grubb Properties’ CEO, Clay Grubb, was quoted regarding the impact of building unnecessary parking on rents and housing supply.
- Bloomberg CityLab, “Car-Free Living Takes Off in Car-Centric Cities”: CYKEL, our new parking-free development in Charlotte, NC, was featured for its innovative land use and affordability.
- Fast Company, “How Parking Lots Across the Country Are Being Turned Into Housing”: Fast Company used our Link Apartments℠ Montford development as an example of creative reuse of surface parking lots in older office parks.
