Grubb to Build Habitat for Humanity House in West Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, NC (October 12, 2021) – Grubb Properties, a leading vertically integrated real estate developer and fund manager, raised $100,000 to sponsor a Habitat for Humanity of the Charlotte Region home in West Charlotte.

Each year, Grubb Properties partners with clients and industry peers to secure funding and recruit volunteers to build a Habitat home for a local family through its Grubb Giving Project. This year’s partnership with Habitat for Humanity of the Charlotte Region aligns with an exciting year of Grubb Properties’ development projects in Charlotte, where the company has been based for decades.

The first build day took place on September 16, with increased safety protocols due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, and building will continue through the fall.

“We are proud to partner with this wonderful organization in our company headquarters of Charlotte to provide a hand up to the deserving Cherry family,” said Clay Grubb, CEO of Grubb Properties. “The increased economic pressures of the past year have exacerbated the severe crisis of a lack of affordable housing, and we are grateful for the opportunity to make a positive difference.”

Chakara Cherry and her family are the future Habitat homeowners. Chakara has lived in Charlotte her whole life and is excited to have a place of her own for herself and her daughter and two sons. Chakara is always the first one to ask a question in the Homeowner-in-Process classes and has been earning sweat equity hours as part of the process of owning her home. When she is not busy working as a customer support agent, she enjoys taking her children out to eat and to the park and watching movies with them.

Chakara’s home is being built in West Charlotte’s Wingate neighborhood, among the 30 Habitat homes planned to be built in this pre-WWII community. The Wingate neighborhood was originally designed for the city’s burgeoning middle class, and has recently seen an increase in redevelopment activity including new home construction and a revived business community.

Wingate’s resurgence prompted Habitat Charlotte Region to reengage development.

“We are so excited to build such a large number of affordable homes in West Charlotte,” said Laura Belcher, President and CEO of Habitat Charlotte Region. “Our plans for Wingate coupled with The Meadows at Plato Price, a new 39-unit single family neighborhood under development nearby, means Habitat will add almost 70 affordable homes in a part of the city that significantly lags Charlotte’s homeownership rates.”

Currently in Charlotte, Grubb Properties has its corporate headquarters at 4601 Park Road and Link Apartments℠ Montford, both in Montford Park. It is developing future Link Apartments℠ communities in Montford Park, NoDa, and the Gold District, and is also developing a cycle-oriented multifamily community in Seversville.
